A Static Dissipative or Static Conductive Solution?

In ESD-safe environments, controlling static is paramount. Without eliminating the risks associated with static electricity in areas susceptible to damage by static, you’re going to run into potentially costly problems. With that in mind, it’s time to make an important decision: Should I choose static dissipative or static conductive solutions?


Companies that are new to ESD control tend to base their decision on the terminology of the material rather than the range of ohms to which the material is resistant. Your ESD protocols will dictate the static-safe material you choose. Materials ranging from zero ohms to 106 (one million) ohms are static conductive, whereas any material that ranges from 106 to 109 (one billion) is static dissipative.

A production floor’s ‘safe range’ is typically 25 x 104 ohms to 35 x 106 ohms (25,000 ohms to 35 million ohms). These ranges may vary within your company and even from one work area to another.

Two factors determine this range:
1. NFPA and OSHA for the first 25 x 104 low point on the range
2. ANSI 20.20 for the second 35 x 106 high point of the range
