What are AEC-Q200 Qualified Components?

The AEC (Automotive Electronics Council) is the industry organization promoting the qualification standards for automotive manufacturers and automotive electronic component manufacturers. The AEC developed the AEC-Q series, serving as the industry standard adopted for automotive electronic components, with the Q200 series focusing on passive components specifically.

AEC-Q200 standards are set to confirm the high reliability of products, including high-temperature/high-humidity resistance, thermal shock resistance, and durability for passives such as capacitors, resistors, inductors, etc., in an automotive environment. It is essential these components meet the high resistance to temperature and vibration necessary to protect against short circuiting.

The AEC qualified passives to fit within grades, which are distinguished by operating temperature and listed as follows:

Grade Temperature Range (min) Temperature Range (max) Passive Component Type Typical / Example Application

0 -50ºC +150ºC Flat chip ceramic resistors, X8R ceramic capacitors All automotive
1 -40ºC +125ºC Capacitor Networks, Resistors, Inductors, Transformers, Thermistors, Resonators, Crystals and Varistors, all other ceramic and tantalum capacitors Most Underhood
2 -40ºC +105ºC Aluminum Electrolytic capacitors Passenger compartment hot spots
3 -40ºC +85ºC Film capacitors, Ferrites, R/R-C Networks and trimmer capacitors Most passenger compartment
4 0ºC +70ºC   Non-automotive

The good news is that design engineers across many industries are able to use these same AEC-Q200 qualified components for their own harsh-environment applications, knowing these components have undergone the rigorous testing and met the same industry standards they require.

Diverse Electronics carries AEC-Q200 qualified components from all of its capacitors, resistors, inductors and crystals categories in several brands, including Yageo, Hitano, Chilisin, Coilmaster and Raltron frequency management control solutions.
