Consider Smocks for your ESD Program

April 29, 2016

Are smocks part of your ESD Control Program? While a person may be grounded using a wrist strap or other grounding methods, that does not mean that insulative clothing fabrics can dissipate a charge to that person’s skin and then to ground. Personnel clothing usually is electrically separate or isolated from the body. Garments that are used to estab
lish the primary ground path for a person shall provide a resistance of less than 35 megohms from the person to the groundable point of the garment.

The evolution of diodes

February 10, 2016

Although many diodes nowadays are made of silicon, it was not always so. Initially, there were two types – thermionic or vacuum tube and solid state or semiconductor. Both types were developed simultaneously, but separately, in the early 1900s. Early semiconductor diodes were not as advanced as their vacuum tube counterparts, which were extensively used as radio receiver detectors. Many types of these thermionic valves were in use and had different funcitions such as double-diode triodes, amplifiers, vacuum tube rectifiers and gas-filled rectifiers.

Is your equipment EMI/RFI protected?

February 2, 2016

The world today is increasingly electronic, with millions of waves and signals floating through the air at any given moment. The electromagnetic waves generated by electronic devices can easily negatively affect other, similar, electronic devices. Such affects are called Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). EMI and RFI may cause malfunctions, specifically, the suppression of signals generated internally in a device, external ambient interference with equipment operation, or emissions generated internally that will interfere with equipment operation. Therefore, EMI and RFI are potential problems in any industry.
